Massive Attack – Mezzanine

Welcome back everyone. Today we are covering a true trip hop classic. This third album from massive attack is probably their best known in commercial release. The 1998 album is considered to be a holy Grail of sorts in terms of our ownership. Let’s take a look and see how it pans out.

  • Cover art:
  • Liner /Inserts:
  • Packaging:
  • Vinyl art:
  • Pressing:

The iconic cover design is a macro photograph of a black stag beetle. This was taken at the natural history Museum and flows throughout multiple elements in the packaging. This simple design is recognizable everywhere. You can’t see it and not know exactly what it is referring to.

This 1998 Pressing from Europe is highly sought after. You can find them on this dogs in various cost levels. The albums are pressed on 180 g. vinyl. The sound is very rich and deep. On my system it sounds fantastic however I do have a lot of snaps and pops. At first I thought it was just one album or possibly a defect. Maybe a scratch. But alas I found this to be true on at least three of the four sides.

This will not take away from my enjoyment of the album to which I listen to probably once a week. The album is known to have mini notorious samples from the cure, doubled underground, Isaac Hayes , and more.

What is the funniest and most interesting element to me is the vinyl design. The center label is simply a color fill of orange. There is no identifier at all. In fact you have no idea what you are playing until it starts.

If you have this album or another pressing. Hit up the comments to share your thoughts as well.
